The historic Samik Beach Apartment in Busan provides the setting for this exhibition. Newly launched as APOproject Busan, the residency opens as a space where daily life and art meet. This exhibition marks its first step.

The title Palette to Plate reflects the two artists’ approach of moving between art and everyday life. A painter’s palette can also become a plate on the table. This suggests that art is not limited to the canvas but can exist as part of daily use. Every object has the potential to shift between palette and plate, expanding the space where art and life intersect.

Busan-based artist Sang Hwan works with ceramics to create vases and objects that bring the language of sculpture into daily contexts. His works act as mediators between people, plants, and spaces, drawing art into the center of life. For him, to live as an artist is to exist in relation to one’s surroundings and to embrace processes of growth. The warmth of clay and the touch of the hand make his works part of everyday living.

Seoul-based artist Soojin Choi studied both painting and ceramics. She prepares her own clay to shape objects such as cups, plates, and candlesticks. Her studio, Muljilsegye, takes its name from the idea that objects exist independently of human consciousness. The works she creates there may function like real objects, interact with people, or even form their own small ecosystems. By shaping matter into objects, she reflects on how humans also consist of matter, as do the emotions we project onto things. Revisiting this materialist view, she encourages us to feel the world more vividly and to live with greater awareness of its presence.

Placed within the long history of the Samik Beach Apartment, this exhibition explores new possibilities of usable art. The traces of time in the space meet the artists’ works, offering viewers a glimpse of how art can live and expand within daily experience.

Just as artists from Busan and Seoul come together here, APOproject Busan will continue to invite artists from Korea and beyond to exchange, create, and imagine new possibilities together.
