Galerie Met 협력 전시로 베를린에서 활동하는 ANNA LUCIA와 강재원 작가의 작품세계를 교차 관람 가능합니다.

This collaborative exhibition with Galerie Met presents the intersecting artistic practices of ANNA LUCIA, based in Berlin, and JAEWON KANG.

<Transcode: 교차연구>는 디지털과 물질, 코드와 조각이라는 서로 다른 언어가 교차하며 생성되는 지점을 탐구한다. 한국 기반의 강재원과 독일 기반의 Anna Lucia는 ‘연구’라는 태도를 공유하며, 디지털적 실험을 물리적 작업으로 확장하는 과정에 주목한다. 강재원은 3D 모델링을 바탕으로 조각적 실험을 이어가고, Anna Lucia는 알고리즘을 수공예적 방식으로 구현한다. 이들은 각각 조각과 자수를 매개로, 가상과 현실, 시스템과 손작업을 긴밀하게 연결한다.

강재원은 ‘미래조각’에 대한 탐구를 중심에 두고, 원로 작가들의 전통적 조각 어휘를 연구하는 동시에 디지털 환경 속에서 조각의 새로운 가능성을 모색한다. 인플레이터블 설치, 가상 공간 속 조각, 그리고 영상 작업으로 확장되는 그의 시도는 조각이라는 매체의 경계를 끊임없이 재구성하고 물질성과 비물질성, 현실과 가상의 경계를 넘나들며 조각의 새로운 정의를 제안한다. 이번 전시에서는 새롭게 선보이는 6점의 조각과 영상을 볼수 있다. 1인칭 시점의 카메라가 조각을 향해 다가가고 손으로 조각을 만져보면서 끝이나는 영상 작품은 눈앞에 보이는 검정 조각(Def 35_support)을 향해 다가가는 관람객의 시점을 의도하였다. 눈앞에는 작은 조각으로 존재하지만 여러 방향으로 확장될 수 있는 여지를 상상할 수 있기도 한 영상 작품은 반대로 작은 조각 작품 또한 대형 조각이나 스크린을 통해 확장될 가능성을 함축하기도 한다.

Anna Lucia는 코드와 수공예의 접점을 탐구하며, 직접 작성한 알고리즘을 기반으로 한 생성 시스템을 통해, 자수 기계로 완성한 텍스타일 작품, 블록체인 상의 생성 예술, 브라우저 애니메이션, 심지어 타투에 이르기까지 전통과 디지털을 교차시키는 실험을 이어간다. 그녀의 작업은 무작위성과 규칙 사이의 긴장 속에서, 작가와 기계가 만들어내는 독자적인 대화를 드러낸다. 이번 전시에서는 자수 작업 8점과 영상 1점을 선보인다. 자수 샘플러에서 발견되는 장식적 요소들을 알고리즘으로 해석하여, 장식미(decoration)의 기호(iconography)를 해체하고 재구성하는 제너러티브 아트(generative art) 작가로 디지털 작품과 기계 자수의 경계를 허문다. 규칙(rules), 시스템(system)을 설정하는 데 익숙하며, 그 시스템을 코드로 구현한 뒤 무작위성(randomness)이나 예측 불가능한 요소를 넣는 과정을 즐기는 작가이다.

<Transcode: 교차연구>는 APOproject가 개관 이후 처음으로 해외 작가 및 갤러리와 교류하는 전시이기도 하다. 한국과 독일, 서로 다른 예술 생태계가 만나는 협업의 장에서 두 작가는 ‘연구’라는 태도를 공유하며, 기술과 물질, 코드와 조각이 교차하는 순간을 제시한다. 이를 통해 관객은 예술이 생성되고 확장되는 과정을 직접 경험하게 될 것이다.

<Transcode> explores the points where digital and physical, code and sculpture meet and interact. Korean artist Jaewon Kang and German artist Anna Lucia share a “research” approach, focusing on how digital experiments can be extended into physical works. Kang experiments with sculpture using 3D modeling, while Lucia translates algorithms into handcrafted pieces. Both artists connect the virtual and the real, systems and craft-based techniques, through sculpture and embroidery.

Kang’s work centers on exploring “future sculpture.” He studies traditional sculptural languages while also looking for new possibilities within digital environments. His practice includes inflatable installations, sculptures in virtual spaces, and video works, constantly redefining what sculpture can be. This exhibition shows six new sculptural and video works. In one video, the camera moves toward a black sculpture (Def 35_support) and ends with the gesture of touching it, reflecting the perspective of a viewer approaching the work. Though the sculpture is small, the video hints at its potential to expand in different directions. Similarly, even small sculptures can be imagined as larger pieces or projected on screens.

Lucia focuses on the intersection of code and craft. Using her own algorithms, she creates generative systems that produce machine-embroidered textiles, digital artworks on the blockchain, browser animations, and even tattoos, blending traditional craft with digital technology. Her work shows a dialogue between artist and machine, balancing rules and randomness. This exhibition includes eight embroidered works and one video. By interpreting decorative patterns found in embroidery samplers with algorithms, she breaks down and reimagines the icons of decoration, blurring the line between digital art and machine embroidery.

<Transcode> is also APOproject’s first exhibition collaborating with an international artist and gallery. In this meeting of Korean and German art practices, the two artists share a research-driven approach, showing moments where technology, materials, code, and sculpture intersect. The exhibition lets audiences experience how art is created and expanded.
